Atul N Gupta, MD

Atul Gupta, M.D., board-certified infectious disease physician with Southwest Infectious Disease Associates in Joliet, has been elected to the position of President-Elect of the Silver Cross Medical Staff for 2025-2027. Dr. Gupta will succeed Dr. M. Salah Lababidy, who currently serves as President-Elect and will become President on Oct. 1 of this year, replacing Dr. Joseph Hindo, who’s served in this role since Oct. 1, 2023.

Dr. Gupta is Medical Director of Infection Prevention at Silver Cross Hospital and has served as co-chair of the Antibiotic Stewardship Program for many years, educating his peers and all of us about safe and appropriate antibiotic use.

Most notably, he was a constant source of calm and reassurance for Silver Cross throughout the COVID-19 pandemic. He helped guide Silver Cross through one of the most turbulent times in our hospital history. From prevention, to testing, to treatment, to vaccination, he served as key medical counsel and hospital spokesperson, educating our staff and the public on every aspect of the virus through frequent video updates and interviews with the media including MSNBC, NBC 5 Chicago, ABC 7 Chicago, Fox 32 Chicago, WBBM Radio and WJOL.

Over the course of his impressive medical career, Dr. Gupta has become a recognized leader in the field of infection prevention and a champion of the highest quality patient care. A native of Detroit, Dr. Gupta graduated from The University of Michigan in Ann Arbor with a B.S. in Chemistry with Honors and a B.S. in Cellular and Molecular Biology. He received his medical degree from Wayne State University in Detroit before moving to the Chicago area. He completed his Internal Medicine residency at The University of Illinois and Fellowship in Infectious Diseases from The University of Chicago.
